When friends came to stay with us recently, we decided to take a trip to the seaside and headed for the charming coastal town of Westward Ho!
Located around 40 minutes from Lower Winsford Farm, Westward Ho! makes for a fantastic day out and is easily accessible for guests looking to explore more of the North Devon coastline.
As soon as you arrive, it’s easy to see why so many people love it. The colourful houses lining the seafront add plenty of character, while the expansive beach stretches out before you, offering a beautiful mix of golden sand and pebbles.
Westward Ho! is a firm favourite with surfers, and during our visit there were plenty of people out enjoying the waves. Even if you’re not a surfer yourself, there’s something quite mesmerising about sitting and watching them glide across the water.
The promenade has a lovely relaxed atmosphere, and there are plenty of cafés, restaurants and ice cream vans to choose from when you fancy a break from exploring. Whether you’re looking for a quick coffee, a leisurely lunch or a traditional seaside ice cream, there’s something for everyone.
We spent a few hours wandering along the beach, enjoying the sea air and taking in the views. It’s one of those places that feels lively without being overwhelming and offers something for visitors of all ages.
For anyone staying at Lower Winsford Farm, Westward Ho! is certainly worth adding to your list of places to visit. With its beautiful beach, surfing culture, colourful seafront and fantastic selection of places to eat and drink, it makes for a wonderful day by the coast.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and have no doubt we’ll be returning again soon.
Interesting Fact: Why Does Westward Ho! Have an Exclamation Mark?
Westward Ho! is the only town in the United Kingdom with an exclamation mark in its official name. The name comes from the 1855 novel “Westward Ho!” by Charles Kingsley, which was set in the area and became so popular that a seaside resort was later developed and named after the book. The exclamation mark has remained ever since, making Westward Ho! one of Britain’s most unusual place names.
