Rescue Chickens at Lower Winsford Farm
Our rescue chickens at Lower Winsford Farm are twelve lovely ex-commercial hens enjoying a happy and well-deserved retirement, accompanied by one very confident rooster named Gary.
Our Rescue Chickens at Lower Winsford Farm
Before coming to live with us, our hens spent their lives as commercial laying birds. When they arrived at Lower Winsford Farm, they were ready to discover a completely different way of life.
They can now enjoy fresh air, sunshine and plenty of space to scratch, forage and explore. They love taking dust baths, hunting for tasty treats and investigating everything happening around them.
Watching our rescue chickens at Lower Winsford Farm discover their freedom and develop their individual personalities has been incredibly rewarding.
Some are bold and inquisitive, while others are gentler and a little more cautious. They may look similar at first, but it doesn’t take long to notice that each hen has her own character.

Meet Gary the Rooster
Keeping a watchful eye over the hens is Gary, our very handsome rooster.
Gary likes to strut around the barnyard as though the entire farm belongs to him—and, to be fair, he probably believes it does. He takes his responsibilities very seriously, proudly watching over his ladies and making sure everyone knows when he has entered the room.
He is full of confidence and never short of something to say. Whether he is crowing, showing off or simply parading around like a pair of fancy pants, Gary always makes us smile.
