If you’re staying at Lower Winsford Farm and fancy discovering somewhere completely different, we can highly recommend a visit to The Highwayman Inn in nearby Sourton – often described as the strangest pub in Britain.

Just a short drive from us, on the edge of Dartmoor, this is far more than somewhere to enjoy a drink or a meal. It’s an experience from the moment you arrive.
Originally dating back to the 13th century, The Highwayman Inn has been transformed over the years into a fascinating maze of imagination, history and eccentricity. Every doorway, corridor and room is packed with incredible carvings, sculptures, antiques, curiosities and hidden surprises. There are winding passages, quirky nooks, towering dragons, mythical creatures, old coaches and countless fascinating objects that seem to appear wherever you look. It’s almost impossible to take it all in during just one visit!
We spent ages wandering around, spotting something new every few steps. It’s one of those places where you can simply lose yourself, and every corner tells a different story. Whether you’re interested in history, art, photography or simply enjoy unusual places, you’ll find yourself constantly saying, “Did you see that?”
The atmosphere is unlike anywhere else we’ve visited. Cosy, quirky and wonderfully eccentric, it feels more like stepping into a magical film set than walking into a traditional country pub.
Of course, after exploring all the hidden treasures, you can sit back and enjoy a meal or a drink while soaking up the incredible surroundings. The food is hearty, the welcome is warm, and the whole place is full of character. Well-behaved dogs are welcome too, making it another great stop if you’re enjoying a holiday with your four-legged friend.
One thing we would recommend is checking the opening times before you travel, as they vary throughout the week.
If you’re looking for somewhere completely unique during your stay at Lower Winsford Farm, the Highwayman Inn is well worth adding to your list. It’s one of those hidden Devon gems that you’ll be talking about long after you’ve gone home.
