We recently headed off on another Dartmoor adventure in search of Cullever Steps, and what an incredible little find it turned out to be.

Nestled in the beautiful East Okement Valley, Cullever Steps is one of those hidden places that feels like you’ve stumbled across a secret. The walk itself is peaceful, surrounded by rolling moorland, grazing ponies and the unmistakable beauty of Dartmoor.

Cullever Steps are a historic set of granite stepping stones that have helped people cross the river for centuries. Although they’re no longer essential thanks to nearby bridges, they remain a fascinating reminder of Dartmoor’s past and are well worth seeking out.

A Hidden Natural Swimming Pool

Just a short walk downstream from the steps is something even more special—a beautiful natural swimming pool carved into the river.

The crystal-clear water was simply too inviting to resist, so of course we had to jump in! Yes, it was cold (very cold!), but incredibly refreshing, and after a few moments it was absolutely worth it.

Surrounded by granite rocks and untouched moorland, it’s the perfect place to cool off after a walk, sit back and listen to the river, or simply enjoy one of Dartmoor’s hidden gems. It’s easy to see why this spot has become a favourite with wild swimmers.

If you’re planning to swim, always take care. River conditions can change quickly after heavy rain, and the rocks can be slippery underfoot.
